Building Healthy Babies...What Foods When?

My hubby and I knew we wanted to raise our kids as naturally as possible, so they could build their bodies on a solid foundation.  After the baby is born, it takes time for that new baby-body to adapt to a new environment (our world). That is why the CDC's Division of Nutrition, Physical Activity, and Obesity (DNPAO) is committed to increasing breastfeeding rates throughout the United States and to promoting and supporting optimal breastfeeding practices toward the ultimate goal of improving the public's health.  I have 2 books on JenPorro.com that I were my go-to's for how long to breastfeed, when to introduce food, which foods to introduce at what time...and how to do all this with a highly traveling full time job!

My friends and family were very impressed at the homemade babyfood and natural progression of fruits and vege's we would give our 2 quickly-growing boys!  Below is a picture of the amount of food that each child would consume within 4 days, at 9 months of age. This was in addition to breast milk! This adds up to be a DAILY consumption of:

  • 1/2 banana
  • 2 carrots
  • 1 1/2 sweet potatoes
  • 1/2 cup of green beans
  • handful of spinach
  • avocado oil (great omega 3's)
  • 1/2 pear
  • 1 apple

The benefits of having a healthy system are incalculable. And the GI system is the way to start.  The Gut Brain connection is a real thing.  And by starting your kiddos out healthy, they are set up for success.  We were able to save 70% the cost of organic babyfood in the jar, by making it at home.  For that cost savings (hundreds per month) we had no problem devoting an hour and a half, twice a week to this process.  Plus we knew that there were no preservatives, and those little guts were being primed perfectly to be great eaters as toddlers (which they are!).  The reusable pouches are amazing and we used them for over a year with each kid.

I hope this gives you some encouragement in making 'healthy' affordable and do-able, even with a very busy schedule!  Good luck new parents and bon appetit!
